From Warm Floors to Coastal Breezes: The Journey of a Rustic Ranger
If you’ve been watching the live stream today, you’re seeing our Rustic Rangers during their most critical stage of development. While they might look like they’re just "hanging out," every detail of this environment is precision-managed to ensure they grow into the premium Legacy Cuts poultry our customers expect.
Here is a look at the two distinct chapters of a Bayview Acres broiler’s life.
Phase 1: The High-Tech Brooder (Weeks 1–6)
The first six weeks are all about foundation. Because heritage breeds grow more slowly than industrial birds, they spend a bit more time in the "nursery" to develop strong bones and robust immune systems.
- The "Water Bar": Just off-camera, our birds have 24/7 access to a custom water bar for critical hydration as well as ample, premium-grade feed to support their steady growth.
- Climate Control: We don't just "keep them warm." We actively monitor a 5-point data system:
- Ambient room temperature and brooder-level heat.
- Heated floors: Ensuring no cold spots and happy feet.
- Air quality and humidity: To keep respiratory systems healthy.
- Natural Rhythms: While you can’t see them on the stream, we have windows that provide fresh Nova Scotia air and natural light, helping the birds regulate their internal clocks before they ever head outside. Occasionally you might catch some of them sunbathing in the light of the windows.
Phase 2: Life on the Pasture (Weeks 6–12)
Once they hit the six-week mark and are fully feathered, the Rangers move to their true home: the lush, coastal fields of Belliveau Cove.
- Slower Growth, Better Flavor: Industrial chickens are often processed at 6 weeks. Our birds are just getting started then! They spend another 6 weeks on grass, reaching their target weight of approximately 6.5 lbs by week 12.
- Regenerative Foraging: Moving the birds across the pasture allows them to hunt for bugs and clover, which creates a deeper, more complex flavor profile and higher nutrient density than grocery store alternatives.
- The Atlantic Advantage: The salt-tinged air of St. Mary’s Bay isn't just a view for us—it’s part of the terroir that makes our heritage meat unique.
Watch closely: You’ll notice the birds on the stream are active and curious. That energy is exactly what translates into the superior texture and taste of a true heritage bird.
