From Brooder to Blade: Flock 1 Hits the Pasture

Chicken May 16, 2026

There is a specific moment every spring that feels like the "real" start of the season at Bayview Acres. It’s the morning we open the brooder doors and let our first flock of the year take their first steps onto the green grass of Belliveau Cove.

As of today, Flock 1 is officially on pasture.

The Heritage Difference: Slower Growth, Better Life

These aren't your typical grocery store birds. Our Rustic Rangers are a heritage-breed poultry, chosen specifically for their ability to thrive outdoors. While industrial birds are often bred for indoor confinement and rapid growth, the Ranger thrives when it can forage, scratch, and soak up the Nova Scotia sunshine.

Raising them this way takes longer—about 12 to 14 weeks compared to the industrial 6-week cycle—but that patience is exactly what creates our Legacy Cuts signature flavor. The slower growth allows for proper muscle development and nutrient density, resulting in a firm, succulent bird that actually tastes like chicken should.

Regenerative Grazing in Action

By moving the flock onto fresh pasture daily, we aren't just raising healthy birds; we’re healing the land. Our rotational grazing system ensures:

  • Superior Nutrition: The birds supplement their diet with clover, grasses, and insects.
  • Soil Health: Their natural activity fertilizes the soil, encouraging diverse regrowth.
  • Animal Welfare: They have constant access to fresh air and the cooling breezes of St. Mary's Bay.

Live Snapshots Coming Soon

We know you love following the journey from chick to table. Keep an eye on our social channels and the website over the next few days—we’ll be posting live snapshots from the field so you can see the flock enjoying their new surroundings.

Secure Your July Harvest

Because we only raise three small flocks per year to maintain our high standards, our July harvest (Flock 1) is already in high demand. These birds are sold as whole roasting chickens, perfect for summer family gatherings.
